February 28th 2006 : A little news...

The Kerbcrawlers have great difficulty with playing midweek shows, as one of our number teaches guitar for a living and if he doesn't work - he doesn't eat. Simple as that. We can only play round the Wigan area, as he finishes work at about 9pm.

We have had to pass over a number of midweek gigs we had booked in at a nice small place in Altrincham (The Wheatsheaf) to our very good mates in Bad Habits, who I 'coincidentally' play bass with sometimes. The first one is this Thursday, when we cover a sudden cancellation. It will be nice to pick up a guitar with them again. Hopefully some photos will emerge from this gig.

The Kerbcrawlers are working on some more songs for the set - 'Money' by Pink Floyd and 'Always with me, always with you' by Joe Satriani are just two of them. We also intend to get 'Everyday' by Slade in there and return 'No more Mr Nice Guy' by Alice Cooper to its rightful place.

The threat of playing a few of our own songs looms somewhere off in the distance....

February 14th 2006 : Sermon from the mount

Hey and hello!

I haven't written anything on here for a short while - mainly bacause the band has been insanely busy and it's sometimes hard to think what to write about. Never write about NOTHING.

Since the last sermon from the mount, we have gigged, gigged and gigged some more and they have all been good ones as far as we went. One had a dodgy crowd who didn't care less that a band was on and they all buzzed off into the other room... and we now find that all the forthcoming gigs there are scrapped as the venue is closing anyway, so we are going to be doing some gig hunting to replace those.

We have picked up a couple of new venues off the back of recent gigs, which is great.

We are going to get some new songs in the set soon. We have been doing the same basic set list since January at nearly all the gigs and, while it's very tight, we need to spice things up with a few new songs.

The band have recently been doing our usual 'guitar hound' tricks. Steve bought his new Ibanez Joe Satriani in late December, Ian H has parted with a couple of guitars and is changing his stage amp again. He's going from Marshall to Fender. Good move - I can't stick Marshalls as a rule. Ian blames his choice to change on the 'fizzy distortion' a Marshall amp usually gives off, like a bad fuzz box. He did manage to make it sound pretty decent though, through putting some effort into setting his sound up and judicious and intelligent use of outboard effects.

Meanwhile, Colin, our drummer, is looking in earnest for an electronic kit.

I have just invested in a John Birch SCDR bass (Rickenbacker 4001 style shape, stereo), more knobs than is necessary, etc. The bass was made in 1976 and I got a tip off that it was up for sale. It needs a little work, but only a little. It's perfectly OK for playing - I have used it as my main bass on the last 4 gigs we've done. They are as rare as Dodo Cack, so I am very pleased.

I will get the Rickenbackers out of the lock-up and get a photo of them all together when I next get a chance to drive down.

More when I have something interesting to say..........
